RIP Sister Edmée
Our Sister Edmée of the Way of the Cross died on the morning of Sunday 19 August — the day before the feast of St Bernard, whose sermons kindled in her a desire to study the Song of Songs, and to share the fruits of her study.

OPEN GARDEN
Our open garden event at the end of June was blessed with beautiful weather. We combined with the Iffley Fields Residents’ Association who kept the the refreshment tent well supplied, and staffed the plant stall. We recorded 171 visitors, and more than £1,000 was raised for local good causes.
OTHER NEWS
Our Warden, Father Andrew Teal, and Sister Clare-Louise led a retreat at Llangasty for community associates, taking as their theme The Lord’s Prayer.
Sister Clare-Louise attended a Christians-Jewish Bible study week in Germany, returning in time for the feast of the Transfiguration when we welcomed Helen Margaret as a Novice Oblate of the community.
Among our guests this summer we have welcomed Sister Raphael’s Korean twin nieces Kyu Ri and Hae Ri for a few days, Sister Anna FDC from the Czech Republic who was with us for a month of study in Oxford and Sister Teresa, a Carmelite from the Philipines who was visiting family members. Our Companion Sarah spent six weeks with us at the end of a USPG Journey With Us placement in Madurai, India. Two sisters from the Society of the Precious Blood spent part of their annual rest with us, as they have done for some years. Sister Mary Philip created this delightful ‘thank you’ for us.
An ominous crack in the wall of the Common Room led us to the sad conclusion that the large Magnolia grandiflora would have to come down. Most of us hadn’t realised just how big the tree had become: it had been there as long as any of us could remember, and probably as long as we have been here. Its dramatic and beautiful creamy flowers will be missed, but we have noticed how much lighter the nearby rooms are.
HARVEST THANKSGIVING
Our Harvest Thanksgiving is planned for 24 September, but we are wondering whether we should consider an earlier date next year. We have had an abundance of fruit: raspberries, peaches, apricots, plums, pears and even figs, as well as artichokes, basil, peas and beans, courgettes, tomatoes and the more mundane potatoes, cabbages and apples.
